My Zoysia Is Not As Green As It Was Before

$

Zoysia may lose its deep green color for many reasons. Most of these reasons can easily be fixed without much hassle. There is no need to be alarmed by the brownish color during the winter months though because of the normal dormancy stage.

  • Dormancy- Zoysia does enter the dormant stage (turn brown) after you receive the first hard frost of the year. This process is normal, and it allows the Zoysia to protect itself during the extreme cold conditions to later achieve its nice green color in the spring. Like deciduous trees and many shrubs, this is natural for all plants.

  • Over-watering– Being drought-resistant is one of the many benefits of a Zoysia lawn. Experiencing heavy rain or having a watering system in low areas like the bottoms of hills can cause the grass to turn a yellowish-green color. Watering shady areas can have the same effect. To grow successfully, Zoysia must receive at least 2-3 hours of direct sunlight a day.

  • Fungus– Sometimes, there may be a fungus in your lawn. You may not notice it at first until you see the Zoysia turn white, yellow, or a brownish red in some spots. If you notice this, you should take a sample of your grass to a local nursery and have it tested. If you find that you do have a fungus, you can use a fungicide. Here is one we supply: http://www1.zoysiafarms.com/prodspec.jsp?id=16F7&cat=30. This product will eliminate the fungus for you and is Zoysia-safe as well.

  • Incorrect pH– If you notice that your Zoysia is growing well in some areas but not others, this can be caused by the fluctuation in pH. Zoysia thrives whenever the pH is between 6 and 7, and the pH can be different throughout your lawn especially near trees. This can be solved by applying lime if the pH is below 6, or by adding sulfur if the pH is above 7.

  • Using Granular Products or Other Unsafe Products for Zoysia- Granular products should never be used on established Zoysia. The granules tend to sit on the leaves of the Zoysia and cause them to burn. Sometimes, certain fertilizers and weed killers contain harsh products that can kill off the Zoysia as well causing it to brown out. This can be solved by checking all of your products before applying them onto Zoysia. If you are unsure if your product is Zoysia-safe, you should contact the manufacturer of the product or just test out a small area in your lawn. Many lawn-care companies are not familiar with Zoysia and may not use Zoysia-safe products.

Overall, Zoysia may change color for a number of reasons. Most of the problems have an easy solution or time will correct the issues. If an area of your lawn was accidentally damaged, the Zoysia may repair itself because of the spreading nature it has.

Is that Rust on My Lawn?

$

Have you been noticing an orange or yellowish powder on your grass blades? If so, it is possible that “rust” has caused this discoloration. This is a fungus which while not attractive, rarely kills grasses. It tends to occur in late summer, early fall whenever the weather is dry. It usually develops on grasses that grow very slowly, like Zoysia. Depending on the “rust”, it may appear as a yellow, red, or brown color.

If you start noticing a color change on your lawn, get down to examine the blades closely. If the culprit is rust, you will notice powdery, rust spores on the grass blades. They will easily rub off on your hand. It is regularly spread by air, water, shoes, or lawn equipment. If you are also having excessive rain for a long period of time, rust outbreaks are more common once conditions dry out.

There are ways to eliminate a rust problem. First, you should maintain your grass by properly watering, mowing, and fertilizing. You should water early in the day, so the grass will dry quickly. If you have thatch built up, you should get rid of that as well. Lastly, by pruning your trees and shrubs, you will allow good airflow over the rust site, which will assist you in defeating it in time.

Overall, rust can develop in your lawn for a number of reasons. Most of the reasons are based on the weather conditions, which you unfortunately cannot control. Do not worry though because there are many ways that you can eliminate rust without the use of harmful products. There are organic fungicides now available. Natural growth is the best solution; however a little fertilizer will speed that process.

Fall Maintenance for Zoysia

Zoysia is a very low-maintenance grass. Once established, there is little that you need to do to keep your Zoysia lawn alive and healthy. Because the end of the growing season is coming soon, here are some activities you can do to get your lawn ready for the cold weather approaching.

  • Mow– During the spring and summer months, Zoysia should be kept anywhere between 1 ½” to 3” depending on your preference. For your final mow of the season, you should raise your deck by about ½” to keep the grass a little taller for the colder weather.

  • Aerate– You can aerate your lawn each spring and fall to keep your soil from becoming heavily compacted. It also aids in preventing/ removing thatch build-up. Aerating will help root development as well.

  • Dethatch-Thatch is a layer of partially decomposed plant material that builds up on the soil’s surface. It can prevent light and water from getting to your plants. You can get rid of thatch by power-raking by hand or even by using a spray-on, organic liquid thatch remover.

  • Fertilize– During the growing season, you can fertilize 2-3 times per year. May, June, and September are usually the best months to fertilize.

Overall, Zoysia is a very low-maintenance grass. By completing these tasks, you can benefit your Zoysia lawn in many ways. However, each of these duties are completely optional. They will just help prepare your lawn for the cold weather coming.

Removing Zoysia from Unwanted Areas

$

Has your Zoysia started invading areas that you did not want it to? Do not worry because there is a solution! Zoysia tends to spread even once established, which is beneficial because it can heal itself. However, if the right precautions are not taken, it may spread into unwanted areas.

Round-Up herbicide is one of the easiest ways to kill any vegetation, including Zoysia. It comes in an easy spray container, and it should be applied whenever a plant is green. Remember that this product will kill anything that you spray. You should not soak the grass; only give the unwanted grass a light mist with the product. For the best results, it should be applied in a zig-zag pattern. Round-Up is rain-proof in as little as four hours, but it is still best to apply it on a sunny day.

For a none-chemical solution, you can always put a plastic or metal border at least 4-6” deep into the ground to stop the Zoysia from spreading as well. This way, you will not have to remove the Zoysia from that area because the border will prevent it from ever entering the area. Overall, there are many solutions to get rid of Zoysia in unwanted areas; however your timing determines which solution you will have to go with.

5 Point Checklist for Finding a Zoysia Lawn Care Expert

$

Sometimes landscape, lawn-care, and garden professionals are not familiar with Zoysia grass and the proper care and planting procedure. Many times, they can be the reason for a Zoysia lawn to become unsuccessful. Here is a checklist to help you determine if your guy really knows how to handle Zoysia and its characteristics.

  1. Does your gardener understand the correct planting procedure?

Your gardener should be familiar with the type of grass you are planting. In this case he/she should be aware that Zoysia should be planted before or during your growing season. It is a warm season grass, so it should not be planted heading into the winter months.

  1. Do they use Zoysia-safe products?

Most lawn-care companies are not aware that some products can harm Zoysia lawns. Be sure that they are not applying any granular products onto your lawn. The granules tend to sit on top of established Zoysia and actually burn the grass. Do not use Round-Up on the lawn as a weed killer, as this will kill the grass too.

  1. Are they familiar with the watering procedure for Zoysia?

Zoysia should only be watered for the first three weeks after planting. Continuous watering after that will actually kill the grass because it is so drought-resistant. Many times, gardeners over-water the grass because other grasses usually need immense watering. Zoysia is the exception; less water is better. No need for a lawn irrigation system.

  1. Do they know when it is time to mow and when it is not?

Amazoy Zoysia is a very slow-growing grass, so it cuts mowing by about two-thirds compared to other grasses. Once established, Zoysia should be kept at a height of 1 ½” to 3”. Some people like to keep Zoysia very low; however, that is not the best option.

  1. Do they guarantee their work?

Your gardener/ lawn-care company should own up to their mistakes.  If they do not follow the planting instructions or perform the correct care and maintenance, they should be responsible for their actions.

When It Rains It Pours: Problems with Lawn Flooding

$
0
0

Last year, many Zoysia lawns were super saturated by the amount of rainfall that occurred throughout the country. Many of you may be wondering how to fix some of the issues that have arisen from these frequent rain showers. In this blog, we have come up with some solutions to the most common issues that occur after a Zoysia lawn has been flooded.

First, you should try to look for signs of a fungus in your lawn. Usually Zoysia is resistant to most types of diseases; however a fungus may occur if your lawn has been flooded.  A fungus may turn your lawn brown in those areas, or it may appear as a thread, ring or slime. Remember not to confuse dormant Zoysia with a fungus however. If you are unsure, you can always take a sample of your grass to a local nursery, and they can test your grass for a fungus. We do sell a Zoysia-safe fungicide here to treat your lawn if you find this is the issue. Here is a link to that product:  https://www1.zoysiafarms.com/prodspec.jsp?id=16F7&cat=30.

Another common issue that flooding can cause is weeds. Weed seeds may be brought in by wind and water, causing your lawn to be infested. We actually sell some Zoysia-safe pre-emergents here that you can use to prevent the seeds from germinating. We have Season-Long Weed Control (https://www1.zoysiafarms.com/prodspec.jsp?id=5698&cat=31), which can kill visible weeds within 48 hours as well as protect your lawn for up to 6 months. Our Gluten-8 Organic Herbicide (https://www1.zoysiafarms.com/prodspec.jsp?id=D141&cat=30) is also a pre-emergent, which prevents weed seeds from germinating and helps lawns compete with annual grasses and broadleaf weeds as well.

In addition to the other issues, your soil may unfortunately become compacted after a flood. Aerating your lawn will help eliminate this compaction caused by rain, soil saturation, and flooding. Also remember to wait until your lawn has greened up for the year before fertilizing. If you fertilize while the Zoysia is dormant, it will not be able to accept the nutrients.

Overall, your lawn may not be in the best shape now; however Zoysia is a very hardy grass and can mend itself overtime. Because it has the winter months to recover, most if not all Zoysia lawns should repair themselves with a little help.

We love your feedback

Until two years ago we never really asked customers for feedback on their experience with Amazoy Zoysia.  We always loved getting the occasional picture or glowing report about a lawn, which we added to the testimonial area on our website.

All that changed when we actively asked every customer to provide us feedback on their experiences with us as a company and Zoysia grass as a lawn via Feefo reviews.  Hundreds responded.  Every review we get back is published for all to see.  The reviews have definitely helped us to get better and here are a few that we particularly appreciated…

“I have bought my Zoysia from Zoysia Farms for over 30 years. Each experience was improved over the last since technology and their website has also improved to give customers a better experience.  But the things that were unchanged were the most important-the best product and unsurpassed friendly personalized service.”

“I have been ordering from them …Zoysia Farms…for more than 5 years and have had no problems with my shipments or the advice they have shared with me.  My grass is healthy and happy.”

“Pleasantly surprised, the zoysia grass arrived very well packed and arrived in very good condition.  Complete with very easy to understand planting instructions.”

“Service was excellent.  Received our order in a very timely manner.  We had 70 plus plugs and never lost one.  Just follow the instructions that comes with your order…we were very pleased.  They were easy to place…we used a 3 inch trowel and made a 3 inch square and lifted the old grass out very easily and placed the plug, stepped on it like instructed, very easy…would highly recommend.”

“Perfect order and service.  Grass looked great. I’ve been dealing with you for several years and will continue to do business with you in the future”.

“Still the best option for grass in my opinion.  Plants have always arrived healthy enough to survive transplantation and the plants last much longer than any other option in my area.  Even with the drought we experience here locally the transplanted plugs went dormant and came back after watering.  Most grass won’t do that.”

“I ordered nearly 300 super plugs back in May and planted per instructions.  It rained non-stop and was cool here in Western NC for days extending a couple of weeks. The plugs were dormant when planted and never emerged out of dormancy.  The company helped with suggestions on-line and over the phone.  When the plugs did not emerge from dormancy, it was determined that the weather and excessive rain was the culprit.  They honored their guarantee and sent a new shipment at no cost.  So far, so good with the new plugs.  Thank you!”

So many choices…

Is this the year you renovate your lawn? If the answer is yes then next big question is – do it yourself or hire someone else to do it.  If the latter, start getting some quotes from local landscape companies on doing the job for you.  Get going early as they are busiest in the spring.  They will do it all and be happy to arrange weekly maintenance for years to come.

However, if you are more of a do- it-yourselfer, Zoysia is a low maintenance variety (less mowing, watering, weeding, and fertilizer) might be a good choice.  A Zoysia lawn can be established either by planting plugs, a kind of starter plant, into an existing lawn or by seed on a cleared area.

About Plugs

There are two types of Zoysia grass plugs that are an economical choice when planting a Zoysia lawn.  Our Amazoy Freestyle and Amazoy Super plugs can be planted in any existing lawn and have a full replacement guarantee.  Our Freestyle plugs can be cut into whatever size best fits your needs.  They are less expensive.  Our Super plugs are less labor intensive because they arrive pre- cut for you, saving both time and work. You can take your plugs right from the box and plant them after making the holes.  Plugs typically takes about 2-3 years for plugs to fill in completely but this can be lessened if they are planted closer together.

About Seed

Seed can be a good alternative to plugs but keep in mind plugs are generally a more economical choice when planting a Zoysia lawn.  Starting a lawn from seed is relatively fast way to create exactly the type of outdoor environment you want when you are looking for a total renovation of a large area into a beautiful Zoysia lawn.   Seed needs to be planted in bare soil.  All vegetation must be removed from the area to be seeded and it is not possible to “over-seed” using Zoysia seed.

There are many different ways you can achieve an Amazoy Zoysia lawn. The key is finding what is best for you.  We are always available to help you make good decisions about your Zoysia lawn.

Weeds are an unfortunate part of daily life when dealing with any lawn.  Although Zoysia grass chokes out most summer weeds, there are times that you might find they have invaded your space.  A few common weeds that you might encounter are:

  • Crabgrass – it’s everywhere, preying on the weak and is prolific. It thrives along the edges of driveways and walk ways and spreads from there. The best defense against crabgrass is a healthy and thick lawn and root system.
  • Dandelions – one of the most recognizable lawn weeds, dandelions have notched leaves and yellow flowers that become puffballs of seed.  Mowing often and removing new growth above ground makes it tough for the plant to produce food and discourages seed production.
  • Clover – a perennial ground cover that produces three leaflets atop a long stem and small rounded flowers.  This plant is a very aggressive spreader and prolific seed producer.  You should work to eliminate this in early spring and any time it appears.
  • Creeping Charlie – also known as ground ivy, thrives in poorly drained and shady areas.
  • Oxalis – a perennial weed that looks a lot like clover but with yellow flowers.  Hand pulling rarely works because you leave much of the plant behind.

Weed control is part of every successful lawn maintenance plan.  Some steps you can use to ensure that your grass stays as weed-free as possible are:

  1. Keep your lawn mowed regularly – you should not let the weed get into seed production.  Once this happens it is too late.
  2. Dig only when necessary – disturbing the soil encourages thousands of weed seeds that sit just below the surface to germinate when kissed by the sun.  The more you disrupt the soil in your beds and lawn, the more you increase the likelihood that weeds will appear.
  3. Mulch landscape beds – mulch stops the germination of weed seeds by preventing sunlight from reaching them
  4. Fertilize appropriately – apply the right amount at the right time.  Fertilizing when temperatures are still cooler is ideal for zoysia grass.  It is important to read labels on fertilizers and not over fertilize your zoysia lawn.
  5. Do not attempt to pull weeds by hand – it might make you feel good but it will not kill the weeds and they will just grow back.
  6. Our top tip for weed control – use weed killers early, before the weeds develop strong roots and new seeds germinate.

Here at Zoysia Farm Nurseries we carry many different weed killers that can help to battle any weeds that may pop up.  Contact us anytime for assistance in determine which one will best fit your needs.

Save Time, Work & Money…

Many of our advertisements say that Amazoy zoysia grass saves time, work and money.  That really refers to what an established Zoysia lawn will do year after year with less mowing, less maintenance and less financial demand for products to keeps it looking its best.

Our Freestyle plugs are designed to also do that right from the start of the project to transition your yard to a Zoysia lawn.  Here’s how:

Save on the work

Because you can plant Zoysia plugs into an existing lawn there is no need to remove what is there.  This saves a lot of work over seed or sod which has to be planted on bare soil after all the vegetation has been taken out.

With Freestyle plugs you can cut the plugs any size or shape you want.  Each sheet is about one square foot.  Some choose to do no cutting and just plant the sheets as is. Plugs can be cut as small as 1 square inch.  That’s lot more work!  Many pick something in between, but that is the freestyle part, you decide how much work to put into the project.

Save Time

If you want a Zoysia lawn sooner rather than later you can plant the plugs closer together.  The closer they are planted the sooner they will spread to fill in and give you a beautiful Zoysia lawn.  A lot depends on Mother Nature and the length of the growing season in your area.  We say on average, it takes 2-3 complete growing seasons when a one inch plug is planted one foot apart to spread and fill in completely.  Everything in nature is variable so it can be quicker in some areas and longer in others.  However, bigger plugs or planting closer together will save time in getting to a beautiful Zoysia lawn.  With Freestyle plugs you decide.

Save Money

Planting Zoysia plugs is a great Do- It-Yourself project.  That is going to save you money right away! The Freestyle plugs will allow you to save even more.  Each sheet of grass can cover up to 150 square feet of your existing yard.  That does require more work and time but you will certainly save lots of money.

The planting of Freestyle plugs will save all three right from the start but you will have to choose how much of each is important to you.  The nice thing is, in the long run your established Zoysia lawn will continue to save you time, work and money every year for decades to come.

Frequently Asked Questions…

While most customers are successful, there are always some questions.  Here are some of the most frequent questions:

  • When can I plant in my area?

Ideal planting times vary greatly from region to region and year to year. We hope to start shipping to most southern parts of the county in early March. We watch the weather for you and only send grass when we believe it is safe to plant in your state.

  • When is the latest you can ship to me?

We stop shipping grass to more northern areas in early August and end all grass shipping by early October.

  • How much does a Zoysia lawn cost?

That depends on how big your yard is and how quickly you want it to fill in.  You can spend less than .10 per square foot.

  • How long can I wait to plant my just arrived Zoysia plugs?

Plant as soon as possible but if you are unable to do so make sure to take the grass out of the box, keep it in a shaded area, and keep it moist.

  • Can you plant Zoysia in shady areas?

Amazoy Meyer Zoysia is not a shade grass.  It requires 2-3 hours of direct sunlight to be successful.

  • How much water does my zoysia need in the beginning?

Amazoy Meyer Zoysia should only be watered every day for the first three weeks (just a light mist). After that initial three weeks, the amount of water you give the grass is dependent upon your area.

  • Can I over water my zoysia grass?

Yes, zoysia is a drought-resistant grass which thrives in hot and dry conditions.

  • How long should I wait before walking/playing on my new plugs?

Use and play should be kept to a minimum during the first 45 days after planting.

  • How long should I keep my pets off of my zoysia grass after planting?

It is best to minimize the amount of time your pets spend on the plugs for at least the first month after planting.

  • When should I mow my zoysia grass?

Zoysia should NOT be mowed for at least one month. After you clearly see new growth developing, cut the grass to about 1 1/2″.

  • What is the idea height to keep my Zoysia grass at?

We suggest a healthy height of 1 1/2″ to 3″

  • What is the optimal pH for a Zoysia lawn?

The pH is best between 6.0 and 7.0 pH.   You can adjust the pH of the soil by adding lime if your pH is below 6.0 and sulfur if the pH is above 7.0.

  • Should I fertilize my Amazoy Meyer Zoysia grass?

Yes, additional nutrients may help speed up growth and improve color.

  • What fertilizer would you recommend for zoysia grass?

We recommend liquid fertilizers like our Stim u root starter fertilizer for use on newly planted plugs and Nutri-20 for established zoysia lawns.

  • Can I use granular fertilizer?

It is not recommended as they can sit on top of the grass and cause burn damage.

  • Can I use weed killers on my zoysia grass?

Yes, but only use Zoysia safe and water soluble weed killers. Do not use Roundup or like products as it will kill anything green including Zoysia.

  • Do you offer a guarantee on your grass?

The best guarantee is to follow our planting instructions but yes, our plugs are guaranteed to grow. See our full guarantee for details at www.zoysiafarms.com.

If you have other questions or we can provide additional assistance please contact us any time. We look forward to discussing how Amazoy Meyer Zoysia may be the best choice for you.

Common Reasons Zoysia Turns Brown…

Common Reasons Zoysia Turns Brown…

Amazoy Meyer Zoysia is a warm weather grass that stays a beautiful shade of green during the warm weather months. It turns a shade of blonde/brown when the weather begins to cool in winter. If your Zoysia is turning yellowish during the growing season there may be a few obvious culprits.

Zoysia grass requires little water but ironically the most common reason for yellowing is over-watering or under watering, depending upon the area you live in. Zoysia is a drought tolerant grass and after it is established it does not typically require much water if you live in a climate where you receive fairly regular rain. Too little water will also lead the plant to start to go yellow and even brown or dormant if your climate is more desert.  The amount of water that you give your Zoysia grass is dependent upon the area you live in.  If you are seeing your grass turn yellow during the growing season it may be your watering schedule and you can adjust this and it should begin to return to repair itself slowly.

The pH for Zoysia to thrive is between 6 and 7. If the pH of your grass is not in its optimal levels then this can cause it to prematurely yellow out.  We would recommend testing the pH. If you find that it’s below 6, you should add lime. If it’s above 7, you should add sulfur.

Pests such as grubs, moles and voles are a common issue that can cause your established Zoysia lawn to brown out.  These pests attack the root of the grass and prevent it from getting the nutrients needed to survive.  To determine if you have grubs you can simply turn over a small portion of the lawn to see if there is an infestation.  Moles and voles will leave small holes in your yard.  Applying the appropriate pesticides will help with these issues.

Finally, you can take a sample of your lawn to a local nursery and have it tested for a fungus or disease if no other cause can be found. Once you determine if this is the issue you may need to apply a product like a fungicide. If the problem has progressed too far you may have to plant new plugs in that area to get it to fill-in.

These simple reasons could be the cause of your Zoysia grass going from its healthy green color to the premature shade of brown but, do not be discouraged. By following our tips your lawn can usually recover.

7 Fall Lawn Care Ideas

fall

While caring for your lawn is a year round job there are a few tasks that you should tackle when the air is crisp and cool.  Warm weather grasses like Zoysia grow slowly and as growth slows down to a stop it is the perfect time to take a few steps to ensure a lush and green lawn for spring.  Here are seven tips to help achieve a better-looking, healthier lawn next year and one thing not to do.

How to Use a Pre-Emergent Herbicide in the Fall | Sod Solutions
  1. Keep the blades of your lawn mower sharp.  Dull mower blades tear your grass and leave a ragged edge that can turn brown. Make sure your mower has a razor sharp edge for that clean cut that leaves your lawn looking great
  2. Aerate your soil. Grass grows well in soil that is well aerated as it is able to better use water and fertilizer more efficiently.  Fall is a good time to aerate your lawn.
  3. Apply pre and post emergent herbicide.  Fall is the best time to kill those pesky weeds in their tracks before the seeds germinate and have time to develop.
  4. Spot treat broadleaf weeds that are already established in your lawn.
  5. Mow your lawn one final time but make sure to not mow too low.  You never want to scalp your lawn as removing too much leaf can be harmful.
  6. Switch to a mulching blade or switch the setting on your lawn mower and mulch grass clippings into your lawn. This eliminates the extra work of bagging lawn clippings.  This can generally help to improve the soil, reduce irrigation and fertilizer requirements.
  7. Remove leaves from your lawn.  A thick layer of leaves keeps your lawn moist which can create a good environment for fungus to develop.

Zoysia grass is an easy grass to care for and following these seven tips can help you have the best and healthiest lawn on the block in the years ahead.

That one thing not to do – This is not a time to fertilize. Save that as a spring project next year!

Oh the weather outside is frightful…

With the holiday season quickly approaching and the wintry temperatures settling in, there is still time to help your Zoysia lawn and here are a few tasks that you can work on right now.

Top dressing lawns have become a popular practice to improve soil condition. It results in a more beautiful lawn as it helps to produce healthier and greener grass through the application of a thin natural, organic mulch. This mulch can help control thatch, preventing weed growth and even helping to grow your soil by adding nutrients.  For a Zoysia lawn, no more than ¼ inch should be applied at a time.

Good soil helps to stop erosion and build plant quality. By starting to build and maintain the soil quality you already have, you will ensure that your lawn is in the best condition possible.

Another tip for building a healthy yard is to make sure to remove leaves in the fall. Permitting leaves to stay on your lawn can allow for moisture to accumulate and is a breeding ground for fungus and disease.  After removing leaves but before the first freeze it is also a good time to aerate your lawn.  Aerating your lawn in the fall ensures excellent stimulation and root growth of your lawn before winter dormancy settles in. Also only actively growing plants need fertilizer at this time of year.  For a Zoysia lawn this should be done in the Spring.

Late fall is an ideal time to be testing your pH level. Using the pH meter before adding lime or sulfur helps make sure that you are only adding what is necessary. The pH meter can be found on our website at https://www1.zoysiafarms.com/prodspec.jsp?id=40BE&cat=3.

Caring for your lawn by doing tasks like top dressing, removing leaves and checking your pH are all ways to ensure that in the Spring you will have the most beautiful Zoysia lawn on the block.

Good stuff (New Hampshire)

“This is the second year I’ve ordered, received and planted the super plugs. Ordering is easy, instructions are simple, and the product stands up well. I love the way the spreading grass blocks out weeds and makes a thick turf.”

Zoysia plugs produce a beautiful thick green lawn (Arizona)

“Always a great shopping experience with Zoysia Farm, don’t have to worry about planting at wrong time for my climate because they will only ship the plugs at the right time to plant. Great customer service.”

Excellent Website (Virginia)

“The amount of information on the website is great! I feel much more informed about the grass, how to plant it, maintain it, and what to expect from it. The ordering process was simple and convenient, and I feel like I got a fair price for what I ordered.”

Great Experience (Kansas)

“My experience with Zoysia Farms was great. I followed the instructions on the web page to easily complete my order. I followed the planting instructions and got all of the plugs planted in an afternoon. I also sprinkled the root stimulator on the planted plugs. I have purchased plugs for the last four years and the zoysia I planted has thrived and spread.”

“Excellent. Delivery was very quick. I love the plugs. Easy to install. Directions were easy to follow.”

Improve erosion (Virginia)

“Very prompt delivery and after a week, the plugs are becoming green. The area that I was having difficulty with seeding because of the slope with my seeds and straw was being washed away. After placement of the plugs we had 2 heavy rains, but the plugs did not wash away.”

Exceptional (Maryland)

“I have bought from them 4 or 5 times and I have never had a bad experience. The orders were always on time and every plug that I have purchased and planted has stayed alive and is spreading. I can only do so many plugs a year and have a rather large yard, thus the reason of ordering so often.”

Warm Season Grasses Return From Dormancy

In the early stages of Spring, customers are always excited to get a head start on planting their new Zoysia grass plugs. At this time of year the grass arrives brown and can be dry in what is called a dormant state. This is completely normal and fortunately not something to be concerned about.

Early in the seasone ship Zoysia while it is still sleeping, so when you replant the grass in your lawn it comes out of dormancy the natural way. Shipping Zoysia this way puts the least amount of stress on the plant while in transit. Sometimes, when the grass is in transit, the dry dirt can even shift off of the plugs, but since the plugs are in deep sleep it causes no harm to the plant or the roots.

After planting the dormant plugs in your lawn, with warmer temperatures, they can begin to grow and flourish as they will receive the necessary nutrients from the soil you’re planting in. As long as the roots are planted and you follow the watering instructions, you will see growth once temperatures are consistently in the 50’s. Zoysia does everything slowly compared to most grasses.

Zoysia is amazingly resilient provided it is planted soon after arrival and follow the instructions for best results. Shipping your Zoysia grass when it appears its worst is actually the best for it.

Do I have enough Sun for Zoysia?

Amazoy Myers Zoysia prefers full sun, but it tolerates light shade. As long as the grass receives 2-3 hours of direct sunlight (not filtered through trees and or buildings) it should do well. It is not recommended to plant under or near trees, or in areas where you have something blocking the sun.

The easiest way to find the best spot for your plot is to do a simple sun survey. The method uses paper, pencil, and three observations over the course of one day. The ideal time to take a survey is in early- to mid-Spring, when trees are starting to leaf out and when you’re able to see the path of the sun as it crosses your preferred planting area. Draw the outline of your planting space on a piece of paper and include shade trees and or other shade producing features.

You should then observe the area around 8am, 12 noon, and 4pm. After each observation draw a circle on the paper to show the area of sunlight. Where the three circles intersect is the place in the yard that receives the most direct sunlight. With the survey you can prioritize your planting space.

Oh No Is That a Weed?

Although Zoysia grass chokes out most summer weeds, there are times that you might find they have invaded your space.  A well-nourished lawn helps the grass grow dense and thick which is better at crowding out weeds. A few common weeds that you might encounter are:

Controlling Crabgrass in Your Lawn | Sod University | Sod Solutions

Crabgrass- it’s an unattractive, clumpy weed that will quickly take over your lawn and prevents your lawn from receiving nutrients it needs in order to grow healthy grass. It thrives along the edges of driveways and walkways and spreads from there. Get after this early in Spring if possible.

What is the Best Herbicide to Kill Nutsedge? [Top 5 Sedge Control Products] | Pepper's Home & Garden

Nutsedge- has a lime green color and grows about twice as fast as regular grass. Its blades are also thinner than those on other grasses, with a triangular stem.

Get Rid of Clover in your Grass - GreenSeasons

Clover- a perennial ground cover that produces three petal-shaped leaves. The white flowers usually bloom between early Spring and late Fall. This plant is a very aggressive spreader and prolific seed producer. You should work to eliminate this in early Spring and anytime it appears.

Using Natural Products to Kill Creeping Charlie :: Melinda Myers

Creeping Charlie- also known as ground ivy, thrives in poorly drained and shady areas. It has kidney-shaped bright green leaves with scalloped edges. In the Spring time it produces purple-blue flowers.

How to Get Rid of Dandelions - Chemical-Free Ways to Kill Dandelions

Dandelions- one of the most recognizable lawn weeds there is. Dandelions have notched leaves and yellow flowers that become puffballs of seed. Mowing often and removing new growth above ground makes it tough for the plant to produce food and discourages seed production.

Weed control is part of every successful lawn maintenance plan. Some steps you can use to ensure that your grass stays as weed-free as possible are:

  1. Keep your lawn mowed regularly- You should not let the weed get into seed production.
  • Dig only when necessary- Disturbing the soil encourages thousands of weed seeds that sit just below the surface to germinate when kissed by the sun. The more you disrupt the soil in your beds and lawn, the more you increase the likelihood that weeds will appear.
  • Fertilize appropriately- Apply the right amount at the right time. Fertilizing when temperatures are still cooler in the Spring is ideal for Zoysia grass, but after weed control application is applied if needed. It is important to read labels on fertilizer to not over fertilize your Zoysia lawn.
  • Do not attempt to pull weeds by hand- It might make you feel good, but it will not kill the weeds and they will just grow back. Otherwise, any root left will regrow.
  • Our top tip for weed control- Use weed killers early before the weeds develop strong roots and new seeds germinate.

Here at Zoysia Farm Nurseries, we carry only products suitable for use on Zoysia lawns. We have a variety of weed killers that can help knock out any pesky weeds listed in this post that may pop up. Click to see the full range of products:
